When it comes to using vintage elements for decorating my home, I always get blocked. Vintage pieces are very specific, so beautiful in their own essence that it would be a shame to place them in your rooms just because. No, vintage style is a story of its own, it needs a lot of attention when combined with other elements and styles and asks for specific uses, like accent walls.
The important thing to remember about vintage inspired wallpaper is that it’s usually very colourful and patterned and if used over the entire wall surface in a room, it can easily crowd the space and make it feel closed and limited. That being said, I’d suggest you use a vintage wallpaper to decorate and give a certain charm to a room, but never as a cover base on which you’ll be building the room décor.
When you want an accent wall in your rooms
When you don’t have any ideas how to decorate your walls but you don’t want to paint them, you can always seek inspiration in your furniture and find the right direction. Creating an accent wall that will complement the entire room ambiance by being in accordance with the sofas and chairs or the bed in the bedroom, will give a meaningful whole to the room by serving as a stylish addition at the same time. However, this is hard to pull out since as I mentioned, a vintage inspired wallpaper will most likely be densely patterned and very colourful, so make sure you look for something that won’t be too much. Also, take the room’s style into consideration – don’t choose vintage flowers in a room with a lot of metal elements, fancy leather sofas and an overall modern look. Instead, go for geometric patterns. And of course, vice versa: if you have a traditional room décor with a number of vintage furniture pieces, add a flower wallpaper.
When you want fun in all rooms
In spaces like the bathroom, the laundry room, and even the patio, you can allow yourself a little luxury by using a wallpaper that’s a little ‘too much’, sort to say. That means, big flowers amd screaming colours covering a surface larger than simply one side wall. It’s possible to do all that in such rooms because here you simply don’t have that much elements; it’s only a the laundry machine and the dryer, or just the shower and the sink in the case of bathrooms. With a vintage inspired wallpaper you get to add a dose of charm to a rather dull and monotonous space.
The patio
Ah, the patio. Usually people tend to neglect this area of their homes because it’s outdoors and what mainly matters there is having the most comfy option for seating. However, the wall behind that seating set can be used as a major decorative element for the entire ambiance. I’d suggest you cover it with a vintage wallpaper in bright colours, like yellow, orange, something green or even blue, with small flower vines. It would go perfectly well with the green grass, or if you just have a large balcony, it will give freshness to the space.
