Red wine has been known for centuries for its antioxidant properties and the benefits it has on the overall health of humans, especially the heart and nowadays, the skin.
Actually, it’s known that people who drink red wine daily, have a brighter, more elastic skin that just screams youth! Aside from having the properties to help achieve that glowing-looking, fresh and healthy look on your face, recently red wine has shown to be especially good in acne treatments. Spread the word to everyone that has acne problems and doesn’t drink red wine; a study published in the magazine Dermatology and Therapy claims that resveratrol, mainly present in red wine, is especially effective in fighting acne.
Scientists that conducted the experiment, found out that resveratrol can kill the bacteria that causes acne. They cultured human skin and blood cells, treated them with benzoyl peroxide and resveratrol and got amazing results. Benzoyl peroxide is an ingredient commonly found in all skin care products. It kills bacteria that causes acne, as the experiment also showed. But, its effects lasts for only 24 hours, which means benzoyl peroxide is not exactly a miracle maker. Another negative side effect was that benzoyl peroxide irritated skin a lot, in addition to redness and skin peeling. Resveratrol on the other hand, is an antioxidant, and when cells with bacteria were treated with it, the effects lasted 48 hours, twice as longer than the benzoyl peroxide. Again, although the effects last longer, resveratrol won’t do wonders to your skin.
What scientists did next was to combine the two ingredients, and treat an acne colony with the combination. The effect was a true scientific finding; results lasted much longer and were surprisingly positive! At first, scientists thought that the two ingredients would mutually cancel themselves out, since one is an oxidant and the other is an antioxidant. But, surprisingly they didn’t; on the contrary they gave amazing result, creating a two-pronged attack on acne bacteria. The conclusion was that resveratrol as an antioxidant boosted the anti-bacterial properties of benzoyl peroxide, making it more efficient in fighting acne.
So is it beneficial for people with acne to drink red wine regularly? Will this have any positive effect on the battle? Although still a matter of study, known researchers suggests that it is possible. Resveratrol is on its way of becoming the new best ingredient for acne treatments that is suppose to revolutionize the entire procedure and actually bring long-term effects. And before it becomes part of our everyday skin routine, it doesn’t hurt to drink red wine from time to time, just to get that healthy dose of resveratrol to keep us glowing and healthy. Another great reason to drink red wine daily isn’t it?
