When my skin break-outs became so frequent and each time more terrifying than the previous one, I had to do something, in the name of my God’s given beauty. It was such a shame to allow my face to look that bad because I wasn’t strong enough to give up sugar. Yes, sugar; my sweet, silent, slow, skin-cell killer. Apparently, sugar did its thing on me; I consumed it so frequently that its negative effects started taking their tax on my skin. That’s when I discovered xylitol.
I’m not much of a cook, but after a week of being on a sugar-free diet, I started going a little nuts. It’s hard in the beginning, especially because sugar is so addictive. So, to satisfy my cravings, I decided I was going to make xylitol sugar cookies; only this time, instead of using white refined sugar, I wanted to use xylitol.
Derived from birch or corn in most cases, xylitol is a low-carb sweetener which contains only 2.4 calories per gram, whereas sugar has about 4 calories per gram. Its glycemic index is only 7, while the GI of sugar is as high as 80. As such, xylitol has little to no effect on blood sugar levels, therefore, it is the perfect sweetener for people who suffer from diabetes, wish to lose weight or simply lower their sugar intake. Plus, xylitol has amazing benefits for your dental health as well. Tooth decay is a horrible and painful condition that also causes a very unpleasant breath. That’s all because the bacteria which normally live in your mouth feed excessively on sugar which helps them thrive.
Now let’s get back on the sweet part – the cookies; here’s what I used for my xylitol sugar cookies and how I prepared them:
- Birch xylitol
- Almond butter
- Eggs
- Vanilla extract
- Baking soda
- Sea salt
- Dark chocolate chips
You can easily manipulate the dosage, although I used it this way: 1 cup of almond butter, 3 cups xylitol, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract, ½ tablespoon of baking soda, ¼ tablespoon of sea salt and as much dark chocolate chips as you prefer.
The procedure is very easy; you just mix everything up and add the chocolate chips. Just shape the cookies round and put them on a plate. Put the plate in a pre-heated oven and bake for 15 minutes.
After the cookies have cooled down, make yourself a cup of coffee sweetened with xylitol, take your favourite book and just enjoy. Ah, the joys of healthy life.
